Our History

On 3rd September 1818, a large room in Oyston Street, South Shields was used for the Baptist congregation in South Shields to meet together for the first time.  By 1821 the numbers of people attending outgrew the room and a new Baptist Church was built in Barrington Street to accommodate 600 people.

In 1880 the church leaders decided that a new, larger church building was needed in the heart of the town and our present day church building was erected.  Westoe Road Baptist Church opened its doors on 5th April 1881.

Over 200 years later (144 years in this building) we continue to be at the heart of the South Shields community, welcoming people of all ages through our doors each week.
